Think India CNLU is organizing a National Essay Writing Competition wherein submissions are invited from school and college students from all across the country.

Topic: “What’s in a name? -Restoring names of institutions and places”

(CONTEXT – In the last few years, names of various places and institutions have been restored by the government. For example, Harigarh, Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyay Station, etc. This has initiated a nationwide controversy.)

About Kanooniyat PIL Drafting Competition:

This PIL Drafting Competition by Kanooniyat aims to provide the participants with a competitive platform to learn about one of the most important skills in an advocate’s arsenal – drafting. For the evaluation process, due emphasis will be laid on a candidate’s ability to succinctly put forward the relevant facts, mention the applicable laws and put forward arguments for the same. The reasoning provided, quality of research, and formatting and language used are also applicable criteria.

The event is being conducted in collaboration with the Chambers of Advocate on Record, Akriti Chaubey at the Supreme Court of India. She is an independent litigating professional with almost a decade of experience in Litigation and Investment Treaty Arbitration. She has appeared in landmark Supreme Court cases like the Ayodhya dispute and the Triple Talaq matter. She, in addition to being a prolific writer, is also an advisor and teacher.

About Workshop on basics of PIL Drafting 

We understand that as students of law, you might not have any prior knowledge about drafting a PIL. For this, we have kept a special workshop in collaboration with Advocate Madhurima Ghosh on the basics of drafting and filing a PIL to be held on 20th September. This workshop will be completely free of charge for registered participants of the Kanooniyat PIL Drafting Competition.

Submission Guidelines:

  • The PIL must be written solely by the registered candidate (s) (co-authorship upto two is allowed), in English, and should not have been submitted for publication elsewhere.
  • The minimum word limit for the PIL is 900 words. There is no maximum word limit.
  • All submissions must be accompanied by a 250 word synopsis. 
  • All submissions have to be made in MS Word format and should be typed in Times New Roman, font size 12 and 1.5 line spacing.
  • The page margins should be 1” or 2.54 cm on all sides.
  • All text should be aligned as justified.
  • All claims of the author (s), in the body of the manuscript, are expected to be backed by reasons along with proper citations and shall not be mere assertions.
  • Any violation of rules shall result in direct disqualification.
  • The submissions will be scrutinized through plagiarism software. Permissible limit of plagiarism is 20%.

Evaluation Criteria and Weightage:

1. Expression of facts and issues in a crisp manner (20 marks)

2. Application of relevant laws and precedents (30 marks)

3. Lucidity and writing skills (35 marks)

4. Formatting and citations (15 marks)

Copyright of the Submissions:

  1. All the PIL drafts submitted shall be the exclusive property of the organizers.
  2. The organizers shall be free to use the information/ views therein in any manner they require and deem fit.
  3. The decision of organizers in deciding the winner(s) shall be final and binding and no query, correspondence, etc. in this regard shall be entertained by the organizers.

Note:

  1. PIL draft submissions incompatible with the above rules and submission guidelines will not be considered for evaluation.
  2. The submission of entries to the competition implies acceptance of the above terms and conditions by the participant(s).
  3. Kanooniyat reserves the right to cancel the event at any point before the conduct of the event. In such a case, any fee paid as registration fee shall be refunded in full to the registered participants.

  1. Participants are required to register for the PIL Drafting Competition by paying the registration fee. (Link Mentioned Below)
  2. Once the registration fee is paid, participants have to take a screenshot of the same and fill the registration form.
  3. After they fill the registration form, participants will receive an email acknowledging the same from our end which will also have the submission link for the PIL Drafting Competition. The registration shall be complete after this step. 
  4. Participants will have to submit their PIL drafts using the submission form before the deadline. A sample draft of the PIL format can be found here. (Participants are encouraged to find previously filed PILs for better understanding of the format and structure).
  5. The participants are required to submit their documents by 11:59 PM, 26th September 2021, after which the submission form will not accept entries.

The participants are required to register for Kanooniyat’s PIL Drafting Competition by paying the registration fee of Rs. 250 (single author) or Rs. 400 (co-authors), through the payment link provided, before the registration deadline, i.e., 19th September, 2021.

The main idea of the National Competition on Legal Innovation and Legal Startups by RGNUL is to showcase the Legal Start Up’s, exhibit their functioning, the challenges they faced or are facing and the outcome achieved by them. The competition is an attempt to provide a platform to all the Legal Start Up’s to exhibit their ideas and work in a competitive ambience.

Theme

The field of litigation is witnessing various challenges for the last few decades especially in terms of pendency of cases, quick disposal, mounting appeals, traditional methods of lawyering that fail to address the contemporary problems and complex legal compliance’s. To address these situations, we need to devise new and better innovative mechanisms and initiatives in the said fields. Innovation and Startups in the legal field are the answer to this paradox that our Judicial System is facing.

Many young entrepreneurs have introduced startups that have come up in the legal system in the past few years especially by young, dynamic individuals. Also, the Ministries, Government Departments/bodies have initiated various innovative schemes for ensuring Justice is served to people at large. The main objective of Legal Startups is to highlight all legal startups and put them on one platform.

Guidelines

  • Only existing Startups/Initiatives are allowed to participate in the competition. Startup/Initiative must be at least one year old but not more than three-year-old from the date of announcement of the competition.
  • The competition is open to all individuals who are 18 years of age or above on the date of release of the competition.
  • Participation is allowed only as a team. The team will consist of a minimum of two and a maximum of four members.
  • There is a registration fee of Rs. 1180/- (inclusive of GST) for participation by Tuesday, August 29, 2021.

NSS Unit of NLU Assam in collaboration with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell of the University feels great delight in announcing National Policy Drafting Competition- विचार (Vichaar)

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY 

Policy drafting and policy formulation are regarded as the primary step of any planning process for development. Participation of citizens while drafting a policy is very pertinent, especially in a democracy like ours as it is believed that the democracy is a government of the people, by the people and for the people. 

In order to inculcate a sense of participation in policy making among the youth, the National Service Scheme Unit of the National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam in association with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell of the University have come up with a policy making and drafting competition. The National Policy Drafting Competition – (VICHAAR) is the first of its kind that is being organised by any institution of the north eastern part of our country. The purpose behind holding this competition is to evoke the youth to enhance their creativity and bring out myriad solutions on some timeless and some contemporary issues given below:

3. Developing J&K and Ladakh

4. Mental Health and Care

ABOUT THE ORGANIZERS 

The National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam (NLUJAA) has been established by the Government of Assam by way of enactment of the National Law School and Judicial Academy, Assam Act, 2009 (Assam Act No. XXV of 2009). The word ‘School’ was replaced by the word ‘University’ by amending the National Law School and Judicial Academy, Assam (Amendment) Act, 2011. The Hon’ble Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court is the Chancellor of the University. NLUJAA promotes and makes available modern legal education and research facilities to students and scholars drawn from across the country, including the North East, coming from different socio-economic, ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds. Recently, NLUJAA has been ranked 16th in the NIRF ranking among the institutions imparting legal education in India.   

The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a Central Sector Scheme of the Government of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports. It provides an opportunity to the student youth of 11th & 12th Class of schools at +2 Board level and student youth of Technical Institution, Graduate & Post Graduate at colleges and University level of India to take part in various government led community service activities & programs. The sole aim of the NSS is to provide hands-on experience to young students in delivering community service.

STRUCTURE OF THE COMPETITION 

The National Policy Drafting Competition – (VICHAAR) will consist of following stages: 

1. Registration and Theme Selection: Participants must register and select the topic before the due date to be eligible for participation. It is advised to register beforehand and not wait for the eleventh hour in order to avoid last minute hassles. Registration is free of cost. Themes once selected will not be changed under any circumstances. Each participant can register for only one theme. A maximum of 2 co-participants are allowed to take part in the competition along with the team coordinator. So, a minimum of 1 and a maximum of 3 participants can register under a team. The registration will commence from 11/08/2021 (Tuesday) and the last date for registration is 11/09/2021 (Friday) 11:59 PM IST. 

2. Qualifier Round – Submission of the Policy Statement: The teams are expected to submit a detailed policy statement on the theme selected during the registration process. Participants must adhere to the formatting and structural guidelines as laid down. The policy Statement should be mailed on: vichaar.nss@gmail.com on or before 03/10/2021(Sunday) 11:59 PM IST. The policy statement also needs to be submitted through submission google form which will be sent to registered participants. 

3. Final Round: The qualified Participants will be expected to prepare and present a power-point presentation for not more than 10 minutes. This will be followed by a question-answer session. Final round will take place on 15/10/2021(Friday). The results will be declared on 17/10/2021 (Sunday).

GUIDELINES REGARDING STRUCTURE OF POLICY 

The draft policy submitted must contain the followings: 

1. Policy Title – A short and simple title apt with the body of the submission. 

2. An Abstract – A summary of the Policy. 

3. Statement of Problem – A concise statement of the problem dealt with in the policy. 

4. Definitions – Defining uncommon or complex terms used in the policy. 

5. Policy Statement – A detailed policy statement which may answer the following questions: 

a. Who is the primary audience required to follow the policy? 

b. What are the major conditions and restrictions? 

c. What are the details on the Applicability and Inapplicability of the policy? 

d. What are the special situations or exclusions, if any, where the policy shall not apply? 

6. Implementation Procedure – Reference to detailed procedures that are recommended in order to carry out the intent of the policy. It is advised to list the procedures in the order in which they are to be carried out. If there is no particular order, procedures should be listed alphabetically. 

7. Cost-benefit Analysis – An indication of the costs involved and the benefits aimed through the policy. 

8. Concluding Remarks – A brief concluding observation outlining the future roadmap. 

FORMATTING GUIDELINES 

⮚ The language of the submission should be in English. 

⮚ Font of the submission must be Times New Roman with size 14 for the main body (size 12 in case of footnotes). 

⮚ Line Spacing should be 1.5 for the main body (1 for footnotes). 

⮚ Citation format should be uniform throughout the Policy Submission. 

⮚ The word limit of Policy Submission should be between 2000-3000 words, exclusive of footnotes. 

⮚ The similarity is allowed up to a maximum of 10%. 

⮚ File Format must be only in .doc/.docx format. 

⮚ The file should not contain any details of the Participants. These details shall be mentioned in the Email while submitting the policy.

Faux Pas: Alternative Judgement Writing Competition: Register by 31 August

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

NMIMS Kirit P. Mehta School of Law, Mumbai is conducting an Alternative Judgment Writing Competition on 15th August, 2021. The competition will be organized by Centre For Excellence which is a research centre of the university and aims to significantly enhance legal research & development, through its integration with allied discipline.

ABOUT THE COMPETITION

The Judgment Writing Competition by Centre for Excellence 2021, has been conceived with the aim of promoting researching abilities of law aspirants and the creative skills of interpreting and applying various legal provisions and drafting judgment. 

The judgment in question is “Union of India vs Naveen Jindal & Anr” where the right to hoist the national flag was the main contention. After years of struggle for independence, Indians got the freedom to fly their own flag, now the question arises, should there be a restriction in doing so? And if yes, then under what circumstances?

Release of the judgment: 09/08/2021

Last date of registration: 31/08/2021

Last date of Submission of the Judgment: 31/08/2021

TEAM COMPISITION

  • Each team shall consist of a minimum of 1 member and a maximum of 2 members.
  • The participants shall be pursuing a 3-year LLB or 5-year integrated LLB programme from any college within India.
  • The team composition may not be altered after registration.
  • There is No Registration Fees for Alternate Judgment Writing Competition.

FORMATTING GUIDELINES

  • The font of the entire body of the judgment must be ‘Times New Roman’ with the font size of 12.
  • There shall be no endnotes in the entire document, the authorities must be cited within the main body of the judgment itself or can be footnoted by adhering to the 20th Bluebook citation format.
  • A line spacing must be kept at 1.5 points, uniformly throughout the document.
  • The document must be neatly bordered from all the 4 sides.
  • Any verbatim copying of any part of the judgment or the legal provision must be italicized and written within inverted commas only.
  • The margins of the document must be set in ‘Normal’ leaving 1” all four sides.
  • The size of the document must be in ‘A4’ size.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

The judgment must be submitted online, through registered mail of the participants and should conform to the following guidelines:

  • The judgment shall not exceed 10 pages, including the cover page.
  • The team is required to cite authorities similar to judgments of courts. The teams must adhere to the 20th Bluebook citation format.
  • The judgment shall conform to the format as mentioned below.
  • The submission must be made in both .doc and PDF format via the Google Form.
  • The name of the file should be the name of author or name of one the co-authors/in case of co-authorship followed by an underscore and AJW21. For example – Michael Scott_AJW21
  • There is strict plagiarism policy with plagiarism limit is 15%

FORMAT OF THE JUDGEMENT 

Every judgment must mandatorily incorporate the points mentioned below, in the body of the judgment, failing which the participants may attract deductions:

  1. First Page.
  2. Name of the Court.
  3. Title, Number of the Case.
  4. Date of Delivery of Judgment.
  5. Nature of the Case(s) (Civil/Criminal/Writ)
  6. Any other relevant information team wishes to incorporate on first page to Judgments of the Indian Courts.
  7. Facts / History & Procedural History of the Petition / Suit / Appeal.
  8. Admissibility / Maintainability of Petitions / Suits / Appeals.
  9. Issues & Points for Determination.
  10. Framing Specific Questions for determination.
  11. Reference to Precedents, Other Sources (both authoritative & persuasive).
  12. Decision on issues framed or points formulated.
  13. Decretal / Operative Part.

About the Organization 

The Legal Stair is an organization which is focusing on law students, legal professionals and practitioners and other graduating students in the field of presentation, competition, writing, research work, and in other legal developing fields, it is a platform providing the power of gaining knowledge and expressing their views, competitive skills and new ideas.  

DESCRIPTION 

The Legal Stair is all here with another opportunity, organizing the Real Court room moot Competition but hey! Wait, it’s not like the ordinary and lengthy moot court system. We are here with one step ahead in Moot Court process, “Competition with real Court Room Drama” because yes it includes ‘criminal matter’ and definitely an interesting one for all!  

The competition carries a slight difference from the ordinary moot system and thus it will catch the interest of many in compelling way. 

The primary objective of this competition is to encourage the law students to develop their competitive and advocacy skills and knowledge for application of laws in the Criminal Moot Problem. 

 Herein this competition- 

  • Participants can take part in the competition as an ‘individual’ or with ‘a co-partner’ or in the ‘team of 3 partners’ 
  • In case of the team of 3- there will be 2 speakers &1drafter. 
  • In case of the team of 2- there will be 1 speaker & 1 drafter. 
  • In case of an individual, the participant will be performing as a speaker as well as drafter (the drafting of applications in all the rounds has to be done by himself only).  ➢ Here, the Drafter will be considered as a Researcher.  
  • Each team or participant will be provided with the ‘Team Code’ and is going to be mentioned with that team code only, throughout the competition 
  • The registration will be on “first come first serve bases”.  
  • Participants are required to be present in their formal dress code.  
  • The competition will take place on an online platform (google meet) only. 
  • All the Participants will be facilitated with the e-participation certificate and the winning teams will get the cash prizes, certificate of achievement. 
  • Top Two teams will get the internship for one month duration under the Advocates of Delhi High Court and District Court.    
  • The participants need to register themselves by the due date positively. The simplified method will be through online mode only. 
  • No refund and withdrawal of the team will be made once the registration is done. 

The competition has been organized in such a way that participations can be considered as in the above-mentioned ways with all the fair trial in the competition. 

Eligibility 

  • Students     pursuing     the     three     or     five-year     LLB     course     from     any     Law 

School/college/university recognized by BCI in India are eligible to participate. 

  • Students pursuing their LLM from any Law School/college/university recognized by BCI in India are eligible to participate. 

Competition details and guidelines 

  • Competition will include 3 rounds: 

1st Round 

  • Two teams/individuals will compete against each other.  
  • The time limit in total will be of 20 minutes maximum. 
  • One team/individual from the Accused side (Defence) and another team/individual from the State side (Prosecution). 
  • Material to be provided in the first round to the participants:  
    • Moot problem with facts and circumstances. 
    • Information report in the form of FIR (Hindi). 
    • Other relevant documents and evidences (required for the round if any). 
  • At first, both the teams/individuals will present their matter and will start with the procedure of defence and opposition from their sides respectively.  
  • No rigid memorial to be needed in this round, procedure will take place on the bases of bail application and other documents only. Therefore, there is no need to prepare any memorial, only the drafting material of application and documents, evidences will be required. 

 2nd Round 

  • The qualified teams/individuals will present their further drafting. 
  • The time limit in total will be of minimum 5 minutes & maximum10 minutes. 
  • Further information (in addition) for the second round will be provided to the qualified teams after the completion of first round only. 
  • Final arguments will take place in this round from both sides of the parties.

3rd Round 

  • The final qualifying teams/individuals in this round going to present their final arguments. 
  • The time limit will be of minimum 20 minutes & maximum 30 minutes. 
  • Further material (if any) regarding the case will be provided to the qualifiers.

 Other relevant disclosure of documents. 

Drafting of all the rounds can be done with the help of IPC, Cr PC, Evidence Act.
